Bible quotations: the apparatus of the block

This is a reference page: it argues nothing; it says how this study quotes the Bible and where to find each thing. Anyone who does not need it can skip it without loss.

The convention

The control text is the Reina-Valera 1909: a fixed edition, in the public domain and free of the silent modernisations carried by many digital versions — where the 1909 says «tiaras» and «pañetes» (tiaras; loincloths), the later revisions say «turbantes» and «calzoncillos» (turbans; underpants), and that difference is not cosmetic: it changes the garment. How that trap works in practice is documented in Problematic garments: the sock, the leg wrap and the trousers; here the rule is enough: every quotation is checked against the 1909 edition, and the state of that check is declared.

When a chapter translates directly from the Hebrew or the Greek, it says so — «working translation», as in Hairstyle and beard: the clock and the map of the figure—. When it quotes a deuterocanonical book outside the canon of the 1909, it declares its status — 1 Maccabees in Problematic garments: the sock, the leg wrap and the trousers—. The Spanish of 1909 serves to locate and control the passage; the reading in each chapter always rests on the original term, not on the Spanish equivalent.

Where each thing is

The chapters on garments and personal presentation carry their own section of «Bible quotations», with the control text and the Hebrew and Greek terms: The warm garment (I): the cold and the sheepskin (the cold and the sheepskin), The warm garment (II): the mantle (the mantle), The covered head (the head), The belt: girding the tunic (the belt), In search of the footwear model (footwear), Problematic garments: the sock, the leg wrap and the trousers (sock, leg wrap and trousers), Decorative finishes: from the end of the chain to the visible sign (finishes), Jewellery and personal ornaments: savings worn on the body (jewellery) and Hairstyle and beard: the clock and the map of the figure (hairstyle and beard).

The chapters on colour gather their lexical field in thematic annexes: white (White in the biblical nativity scene), yellow and gold (Yellow in the biblical nativity scene), blue, violet and purple (Blues and violets in the biblical nativity scene), red, scarlet and the purple-red «morado» (Reds and purples in the biblical nativity scene), green (Green in the biblical nativity scene), brown and sackcloth (Brown in the biblical nativity scene), black and the dark (Black in the biblical nativity scene).

The workshop tables

The complete inventory, book by book, lives in the workshop tables of Fuentes bíblicas. 17 books for now:

Genesis · Exodus · Leviticus · Numbers · Deuteronomy · Judges · 1 Samuel · 2 Samuel · 2 Kings · 1 Chronicles · Esther · Job · Proverbs · Isaiah · Zechariah · Matthew · Luke

They are research instruments and are not published for now. The chapters refer to them through this page.

Status

Many quotations in this study have already been taken from and checked against the 1909 edition; the systematic check of all of them is still under way. Meanwhile, each chapter declares the state of its quotations.
