The Nativity cycle: scenes and characters

The Nativity cycle cannot be reduced to a single scene. It is a set of episodes, characters and relationships that, over time, have given rise to an immensely broad visual tradition.

This block studies the scenes and the characters, but also the way they appear in art: how they have been represented, which gestures recur, which elements come from tradition and what changes the different artistic sensibilities introduce.

Everything studied here — the scenes, their iconography, their iconology, the props, the gestures and the atmospheres— has one purpose: to nourish the reflection of those who are going to give shape to the nativity scene.
