The fisherman

Joan Amades (1946) writes:
«The fisherman. By the edge of real or simulated water, which is never missing in nativity scenes where it forms a river or a pond, there is always a fisherman, sometimes standing but more often sitting on a rock, like a cliff-side figure. He carries a long rod with a small net hanging from it, at the end of which a small, silver-plated lead fish dangles gracefully. This figure usually wears a hat, as if shielding himself from the sun, and very rarely is depicted wearing a traditional Catalan cap. Sometimes, he has a small basket next to him where he places the fish he catches. The fisherman is very popular in our imagery; he appears in illustrations of the Sun and Moon, and on ceramic tiles, and he fits perfectly within the nativity scene.

It is very likely that figurine makers drew inspiration from these illustrations, as the depictions on tiles and other imagery likely predate popular nativity scene iconography. The fisherman is also found in the Provençal nativity scene, usually standing and wearing the Catalan cap. He tends to represent a sea fisherman rather than one by a river or pond. The Neapolitan fisherman is accompanied by a young girl, and in Sicily, he carries a basket for the fish he catches. This figure is also found in other regions of Italy.» (p. 305).[1]

Milà Barruti - Laura Vinyoles (1980) write:
«In Catalonia, there are characters that also appear in printed imagery and on tiles, such as the fisherman, the hunter, and the "caganer" (a traditional Catalan figure), but this is not common. The true source of inspiration for the figurine maker comes from their own surroundings.
The nativity scene depicts a rural environment, where all the scenes take place outdoors.» (p. 32)[2]

The Fisherman: Silence and Peace by the Nativity's Shore

Amid the hustle of the shepherds' adoration, among the joyful music and offerings, there is a figure who brings serenity and balance to the nativity scene: the fisherman with his rod. He is not one of the shepherds approaching the baby Jesus, nor does he bring material gifts or music. His role is different, yet equally essential. The fisherman reflects the slow rhythm of everyday life, a figure that reminds us that even in the most transcendent moments, life continues with its small tasks.

Sitting quietly by the edge of a river or pond, or perhaps by the sea, the fisherman casts his rod, patiently waiting for a fish to bite. He wears a hat to protect himself from the sun, and his relaxed posture suggests the many days he has spent in silence, connected with nature. A small silver fish dangles from his rod, symbolizing his perseverance and patience.

The fisherman is not there to adore the baby Jesus directly, but his presence is essential in creating the atmosphere surrounding the scene. While the music from the flutist, the bagpiper, and the tambourine woman fills the air, the fisherman brings a silent calm, a pause amid the movement and adoration. He embodies the essence of the popular nativity scene, a figure who may seem like an extra, but without him, the representation would be incomplete.

This character reflects rural life, so important in Catalan nativity traditions. As Joan Amades describes, the fisherman is a figure present in nativity scenes not only in Catalonia but also in regions like Provence and Sicily. In our case, he is often depicted as a river fisherman, holding a long rod, often seated on a rock by the water’s edge. Sometimes, he carries a basket to collect his fish, and his relaxed posture speaks of a life that moves at a different, slower, more contemplative pace.

The fisherman symbolizes a connection with nature, the serenity that comes from being in harmony with his surroundings. Alongside the other nativity figures, he reminds us that peace can be found in the simplest moments, in the quiet act of waiting for a fish to bite. His role is to create atmosphere, a living backdrop that transports us to a rural world where every detail, no matter how small, has its place.

In this scene of adoration, the fisherman is a silent yet powerful presence, balancing the vibrant energy of the shepherds and the music with calm and patience. His figure may not stand out, but without him, the nativity scene would feel incomplete, missing the serenity he brings. The fisherman represents the essence of life continuing with its routines and quiet moments, even amid the most miraculous events.
