The Pipe Player

Joan Amades (1946) writes:
«A young shepherd plays the flute to make music at the stable while his companions adore the Baby Jesus. The flute is made of wire or a small twig. This character, like the other musicians, is essential in the nativity scene, which people cannot imagine without music, always associating the nativity with sound. Among our popular music traditions, there are nativity figures that only play the flute, while others also play the tambourine. These figures, like other musical ones we will discuss, are now often dressed in "galatea" attire rather than as shepherds or common folk. The presence of musicians among the shepherds is a tradition found in nativity scenes everywhere. The flute player, who only plays this instrument, also appears in Sicilian nativity scenes. The one who also plays the tambourine is found in Provence, where the tambourine player, who plays only the typical Provençal tambourine, is also a fixture.» (p. 294). [1]

Milà Barruti - Laura Vinyoles (1980) writes:
«This character is indispensable in the nativity scene. Some figures play only the flute, which is usually made of iron or a small twig, while others also play the tambourine. Both are very common in Provence.» (p. 58)[2]

The Flute Player: The Melody of Adoration

Among the shepherds approaching the stable to see Baby Jesus, there is one who doesn’t bring material gifts. He carries no offerings of wool, milk, or bread, but his role is indispensable in this scene of peace and adoration: he is the flute player, the humble musician who, with his small flute, offers the only thing he has—his music—to brighten the atmosphere and honor the arrival of the Savior.

The flute player is a discreet yet fundamental figure in the nativity scene. While the other shepherds bow before Baby Jesus, he stands slightly apart from the group and gently begins to play his flute, an instrument made of wood or a small twig. His notes fill the air with a soft and ancient melody, accompanying the sacred moment of adoration. It’s not loud or exuberant music, but a simple and peaceful tune that seems to spring from the heart of the earth, a melody that connects nature, the shepherds, and the stable.

According to tradition, the flute player’s music is indispensable. People cannot imagine a nativity scene without the sound that accompanies this moment, as the nativity and music go hand in hand, bound by the same essence. As Joan Amades explains, the flute is a humble, almost symbolic instrument, but it carries deep cultural significance. In our lands, both in popular music and nativity figures, the flute player holds a special place. With his notes, he not only enhances the adoration but also conveys the joy of the nativity to all those present.

The figure of the flute player is not only found in Catalonia; his presence extends to other regions like Sicily and Provence, where the flute and tambourine are part of nativity traditions. But in our nativity scene, it is the sound of the simple and pure flute that sets the rhythm of adoration. Sometimes, this shepherd also plays the tambourine, adding a gentle rhythm to his melody, but always maintaining the same essence: a modest sound filled with emotion.

In the nativity scene, his figure represents more than just a musician. The flute player is a symbol of the beauty of simplicity. In a world that often celebrates grandeur, he reminds us that what truly matters is the offering of what we carry inside: our voice, our music, our soul. His melody may not be loud, but it has the power to unite all those present in a moment of spiritual communion, celebrating the nativity with the notes of the heart.

The flute player brings no grand material gift, but his music, the notes that flow softly from his flute, are a unique and precious tribute. With each note, he adores Baby Jesus in the way he knows best, adding a touch of joy and serenity to the celebration. His presence reminds us that wealth is not necessary to celebrate the miracle of life: all we need is the will to share what we have that is most authentic.
