The Chicken Woman

Joan Amades (1959) writes:
«She is depicted holding a rooster by its legs; she could be offering it to Baby Jesus, taking it to the market to sell, or returning from buying it. This character is also found among Provencal nativity figures.» (p. 294). [1]

The Offering Chicken: A Christmas Story

Many years ago, in a small village in Catalonia, there lived a humble and generous woman known to everyone as The Chicken Lady. Her life was filled with simple tasks, but one thing set her apart from her neighbors: she carefully raised a small farm of animals, especially a strong and majestic rooster, a farm-raised chicken she had nurtured since it was a chick.

Winter arrived, and with it, the Christmas festivities. Each year, the woman eagerly awaited this season, not only for the celebration but also for the chance to participate in one of the village’s oldest traditions: the offering to Baby Jesus, held at the local church's nativity scene. The villagers brought their best as a symbol of gratitude and hope.

That year, the woman decided that her beloved chicken would be her offering. After all, the rooster was the best she had. She thought about how this sacrifice would show her gratitude for the blessings she had received and her hope for a better future for everyone. But it was not an easy decision, as she had raised the animal with great care and had grown attached to it.

With the chicken carefully held by its legs, she left her home with a heart full of emotions. As she walked through the village’s narrow streets, people watched her, fully aware of the importance of her offering. Children stopped to admire her, and some neighbors greeted her with encouraging smiles.

When she arrived at the church nativity, she saw the other offerings: bread, fruits, flowers, and other humble gifts, all given with love and devotion. But when the Chicken Lady knelt before Baby Jesus, she felt a deep sense of peace. She offered the rooster as a symbol of her gratitude and devotion, and at that moment, it felt as if all her love and effort were returned to her in an invisible blessing.

That night, the rooster was not just an offering. It became a symbol of humility and connection to the roots of Catalan tradition. From that year onward, the figure of The Chicken Lady became part of many nativity scenes, not just as another figure but as a reminder that the best gift we can offer is the one that comes from the heart.
